If you were guaranteed success, what would you do differently?
A typical response is – ‘well I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing…’
The answer is important, as it immediately highlights an issue.
Rather than focussing on those things which bring you success, you have more than likely got trapped into failure thinking. You are working on second best. Work which is not central to your vision or passion.
Compare and contrast with Damien Hirst.. One of the first things Damien did when he left education was to hire a large space in order to exhibit. At his first opening other struggling artists who had exhibited sold works. Damien sold nothing. Yet his experience did not put him off. He didn’t start planning for failure by copying or doing something not true to himself. Oh no. Instead he got hold of a cow and a chainsaw, and made history. He is now the richest living UK artist.
Damien shared a common trait with other hugely successful individuals, namely an almost arrogant self belief. The kind of self belief that drives them to do things others don’t, or simply do them far better. As a result they actively work on fulfilling their self belief. They take decisions that others frown at. They expend energy others can only dream of. When they hit a brick wall, they find a way through or round it.
My question to you is this. If you were guaranteed success, what would you stop doing? Think about it, the answer may just be the key to your success.
